What Are Free Entry Points?

Understanding Free Entry Point Conversations on WhatsApp 📲✨

When a conversation starts from a Facebook or Instagram ad that clicks to WhatsApp or a Facebook Page CTA, it is free for the first three days. However, this applies only to the first user-initiated conversation—any follow-up conversations will be charged.

💡 Key Points:
✅ The first conversation from a free entry point is free of charge.
Standard ad costs still apply—while the conversation is free, the Facebook or Instagram ad itself is not.
Twilio per-message fees still apply outside of WhatsApp’s free window.

The 24-hour conversation window starts when a user sends the first message to your business. During this period, you can freely respond without incurring additional charges. After 24 hours, any further messages require a paid template message to restart the conversation.

WhatsApp automatically categorizes your templates into one of its conversation typesMarketing, Utility, or Authentication—based on content and intent. You can check the assigned category within your WhatsApp Business Manager or messaging provider’s dashboard.

When submitting a WhatsApp template for approval via the Twilio Console, you’ll be asked to select a category (Marketing, Utility, or Authentication). You can either:

Allow WhatsApp to override your selection and approve the template accordingly.
Opt for rejection if the selected category doesn’t match WhatsApp’s classification.

Twilio’s system will notify you if your selection is accepted or rejected and display the final category assigned by WhatsApp. Additionally, all templates created before June 1, 2023, have been automatically reclassified by Meta’s machine learning classifier under the new category-based pricing model.
